2008 – Manitoba
The people of Dauphin, Manitoba are proud to recognize Dr Michael Penrose as a deserving recipient of one of Canada’s Family Physician of the Year awards. He is described by his colleagues and patients as ‘an all round quality person’.
A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Mike obtained his certification in family medicine in 1990. Since then he has practiced in his hometown of Dauphin where he is well known and recognized as a skilled clinician with excellent doctor-patient relationships. Mike works at the Dauphin Medical Group and Dauphin Regional Health Centre with special interests in emergency care as well as care of the elderly, cardiac stress testing, obstetrics and chemotherapy for cancer patients.
Mike enjoys the opportunity to teach medical students and residents at the University of Manitoba Parkland Family Medicine Residency Unit and to serve as a preceptor for physician assistant students with the Department of National Defence at CFB Borden.
To stay current in his diverse clinical interests, Mike pursues continuing professional development through monthly sessions in rural medicine, Family Medicine Forum, practice-based small group learning and Rural Interest Groups.
Mike takes great pride in being a small town family doctor where he knows almost everyone in the community. In return, they respect Mike’s exceptional dedication as a physician, teacher, mentor, colleague and friend.
On a personal note, Mike’s priority is spending time with his wife Denise, daughter Shauna and grandson Jake. He also enjoys community volunteer work and hobbies that include fishing, hockey, mountain biking, snowmobiling and golf.
“Being a family physician has been a challenge, a commitment, and a sacrifice. The rewards by far outweigh the price. The recognition involved in being chosen Manitoba’s Family Physician of the year further reinforces these rewards. I am truly fortunate to love my work and my life.”
