2005 – Manitoba

Dr James Boyd graduated from medical school at the University of Manitoba in 1972 and has been practicing family medicine for 30 years in Winnipeg. He is site medical manager of the Family Medicine Program for Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and head, Department of Family Practice, Seven Oaks General Hospital. He also runs a practice at the Kildonan Medical Centre with hospital privileges at Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg. Dr Boyd is the site coordinator for low risk obstetrics at the Health Sciences Centre, and associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

Since graduating, he has been involved with The College of Family Physicians of Canada. Among his many roles, he was president of both the Manitoba and Canadian chapters, and chaired the 50th Anniversary Committee of the CFPC. He also finds time to tutor physicians for the CFPC’s PEARLS CME Program, and is a peer reviewer for Canadian Family Physician. In 2001, he developed a low risk obstetrics model and, this year, he is involved in launching a new family practice model to look after unassigned hospitalized patients. He is also involved with family medicine residents in community outreach programs where they speak to junior high school students on various health topics.

Dr Boyd is passionate about his work. He credits his father for his love of medicine. He was a family physician himself for 53 years.

Married to Karin and a father of four children, Dr Boyd is proud that his entire family are graduates of the University of Manitoba. During his spare time, he enjoys cross country skiing, woodworking, football, hockey, tennis and spending time at his cottage, now his permanent home at Victoria Beach, Manitoba.
