A physician whose career in Family medicine spans the course of 55 years, Dr Charles Dewar is recognized for his contribution to the health and well being of his community in O’Leary, Prince Edward Island. Affectionately known as ‘Dr Charles’, he is lauded by patients and colleagues as the epitome of a family physician.
Receiving his medical doctorate from Dalhousie University in 1954, Dr Charles began his practice before publicly funded health care was implemented across Canada, and was actively involved in the discussions supporting Medicare for Canadians.
In addition to his large family practice, Dr Charles has provided care in obstetrics, rural emergency medicine and family practice anesthesia to support the Community and Western Hospitals in rural PEI. For many years Dr Charles also served as a coroner of Prince County.
From 1963 to 1964 Dr Charles presided as President of the PEI College of Family Physicians. He served for four years on the Executive Committee of the Medical Society of PEI and was President in 1974. He was awarded Certification in Family Medicine in 1970 and Fellowship in 1983. In 2000 the CFPC honoured Dr Charles with a Lifetime Membership.
Once an avid photographer, pilot and skydiver, Dr Charles now enjoys being a member of Ceilidh Brae, a local musical group involved with community fundraising. He is married to Frances and they have three adult children, Norman, Keith and Pamela as well as thirteen grandchildren!
